‘The Whale’: Heavy to watch, but astounding nonetheless

The psychological thriller “The Whale” facilities round a 272-kilogram (600-pound) man. However, it’s far more than only a story about an obese man, it’s the story of a person whose soul is as gentle as a feather.

Charlie is a reclusive, morbidly overweight English literature trainer unable and unwilling to cease consuming himself to loss of life. As his well being woes mount and his life expectancy is put at only a week, Charlie struggles to reacquaint himself together with his estranged daughter. We meet him on Monday and the movie goes day-to-day to Friday.

Charlie is a delicate big, not raging at his quick approaching demise. He’s an optimist and a fierce believer in reality although there’s nothing in his world reinforcing both. “The Whale” just isn’t at all times nice to look at however the payoff and performances make it an astounding movie.

Stationary and wheezing on his sofa, Charlie is repeatedly visited by a constellation of individuals – a pleasant nurse, his teenage daughter and a younger missionary from an apocalyptical church. They all want one thing from this well-meaning however damaged man – religious, medical or familial. They are all damaged, too.

The film, based mostly and tailored from the off-Broadway play of the identical identify by Samuel D. Hunter, is directed by Darren Aronofsky, who helmed such darkish tales as “Requiem for a Dream” and “Black Swan.” Hunter’s depiction of the mortification of the flesh completely meets a director enamored by the grotesque.

Brendan Fraser has earned plenty of Oscar buzz for taking part in Charlie, permitting his signature pet canine face to stay regardless of a large physique swimsuit and swelling prosthetics. And why not? It is likely one of the most shifting performances in years, filled with humanity and a redemptive triumph for an actor who hid his expertise in shortly forgotten movies like “Blast from the Past,” “Hair Brained” and “Airheads.”

The entire forged is ideal, from Sadie Sink as Charlie’s spiky daughter, Hong Chau as his foul-mouthed nursing angel, Ty Simpkins because the missionary with a hidden previous and Samantha Morton as his ex-wife with simmering anger and but nonetheless love. There are regular references to Herman Melville’s “Moby Dick,” which supplies the movie the title and its doomed vibe.

Charlie has ballooned ever because the loss of life of his same-sex companion, who apparently willed himself to loss of life by losing away in hunger after their relationship was condemned by his church-leading father. Charlie has apparently determined to die the alternative manner.

He is unfortunately apologetic to his nurse – “I’m sorry,” he says frequently – and shuts the video digicam on his laptop computer throughout his on-line courses. Even the pizza supply man does not know what he seems like. “Who would want me to be part of their life?” he asks.

There has been worry that the movie may be fatphobic and it is true that cinematographer Matthew Libatique usually leans into unflattering methods to indicate Charlie, soaping in a bathe, straining to face up or contact the ground, coated in sweat and shoving pizza or fried rooster into his mouth. Maybe a few of that would have been touched on as an alternative of lingered on.

But physique weight just isn’t what the author and director need to concentrate on right here. It’s extra the load of guilt and love and religion. “I just want to know I did one good thing in my life!” Charlie shouts. One feels that the underlying difficulty in “The Whale” may have been weight problems as simply as most cancers or alcoholism or a blood dysfunction. Hunter is exploring salvation, redemption, determinism and household.

The play has been sharpened for the display screen however there is no escaping the truth that it’s rooted inside Charlie’s Idaho condo, which he shuffles about in on a walker or later a wheelchair. This does not make for sweeping cinema. Sometimes the condo feels confining like a ship, including to the Melville theme.

Some of the filmic makes an attempt are compelled, just like the symbolically heavy chicken that Charlie feeds outdoors his window, the thrice actors rush to go away the condo solely to cease and switch again, and the heavy rain that builds because the movie’s climax nears. But this can be a movie that stays with you and modifications you. It is heavy, certainly.
