Around 1.1 million Ukrainian refugees entered Bulgaria since conflict broke out in Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022, stated a senior UN official on Wednesday.

Speaking on the nationwide press membership within the capital metropolis of Sofia, Seda Kuzucu, consultant of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), added that Bulgarian authorities registered over 151,000 of those refugees for short-term safety, based on the state-run BTA news company.

Presently, almost 50,000 Ukrainian refugees reside in Bulgaria, she added.

Kuzucu emphasised that the conflict led to the largest refugee disaster in Europe since World War II, throughout which some 8 million refugees have been compelled to flee to neighboring nations.

“The war shows no signs of abating, and humanitarian needs are likely to continue,” she stated.
