Tunisian authorities shuttered the headquarters of the opposition Ennahdha get together on Tuesday, a day after arresting its chief Rached Ghannouchi, a senior get together official stated.
“A police unit showed up at the party’s main headquarters (in Tunis) and ordered everyone there to leave before closing it,” Riadh Chaibi stated.
“The police also closed the other offices of the party elsewhere in the country and prohibited any meeting in these premises,” he instructed AFP.
The transfer got here after Ennahdha’s veteran chief Ghannouchi was arrested at his residence within the capital Tunis, the newest in a string of opposition figures held.
Ennahdha was the most important get together in Tunisia’s parliament earlier than President Kais Saied dissolved the chamber in July 2021.
The get together’s vice-president, Mondher Lounissi, instructed a news convention late Monday that Ghannouchi had been taken to a police barracks for questioning and that his attorneys had not been allowed to attend.
His arrest got here after media stories through which he allegedly stated Tunisia could be threatened with “civil war” if political Islam, from which his get together originated, had been eradicated there.
A supply on the Interior Ministry quoted by Tunisian media confirmed that Ghannouchi’s arrest was linked to those statements.
Since early February, authorities within the North African nation have arrested greater than 20 political opponents and personalities.
They have included politicians, former ministers, businessmen, commerce unionists and the proprietor of Tunisia’s hottest radio station, Mosaique FM.
Saied, 65, claims these detained had been “terrorists” concerned in a “conspiracy against state security.”
