Gas blast injures nine at Slovak coal mine

A fuel blast injured 9 folks Wednesday at a coal mine within the western Slovak city of Novaky, rescuers mentioned.

“Four of them are in critical condition,” Alena Krcova, a spokeswoman for the rescue companies, advised AFP.

No one else was current on the mine when the incident occurred at 4:30 pm (1430 GMT), based on mine spokeswoman Adriana Sivakova.

Two of the injured are Polish whereas a 3rd is Ukrainian, Prime Minister Eduard Heger advised journalists after arriving on the scene.

“There was burning of accumulated methane. Our miners suffered burns,” mine common director Stanislav Gursky advised AFP.

“We do not know what sparked the flames… We will launch an investigation,” the top of the Hornonitrianske Bane Prievidza mining firm added.

According to a authorities decision adopted in 2019, Slovakia was attributable to cease coal mining by the tip of this 12 months, consistent with European local weather targets.
