Ukraine detains tycoon Kolomoisky on fraud suspicion

A Kyiv courtroom has ordered a two-month detention for billionaire Igor Kolomoisky, below suspicion of fraud and cash laundering, Ukrainian media reported late on Saturday.

The arrest of the tycoon — considered one of Ukraine’s richest males and as soon as an ally of President Volodymyr Zelensky — comes as Kyiv says it’s nonetheless decided to crack down on corruption throughout the Russian invasion.

“The court chose a preventive measure for Igor Kolomoisky in the form of detention for two months with an alternative in the form of a bail of more than 509 million Ukrainian hryvnias,” Radio Svoboda reported.

Ukraine’s SBU safety service stated Kolomoisky was below suspicion of fraud and illegally acquiring property.

Kolomoisky, 60, appeared at Kyiv’s Shevchenkivsky district courtroom late on Saturday, carrying a yellow t-shirt and a blue jumper — the colors of the Ukrainian flag.

Kolomoisky backed Zelensky’s candidacy throughout the 2019 presidential election.

Before turning into president, Zelensky rose to fame as a comic, appearing on a tv channel owned by Kolomoisky.

Since Russia invaded in February final 12 months, Zelensky has repeatedly vowed to battle corruption in Ukraine — a key requirement by Kyiv’s western allies.
