GM, Samsung announce plan for new battery cell plant in US

General Motors and South Korea’s Samsung SDI plan to take a position greater than $3 billion in constructing a brand new battery cell manufacturing plant within the United States, the businesses mentioned Tuesday.

They didn’t announce the supposed location of the brand new manufacturing facility, which is predicted to start operations in 2026, the businesses mentioned in an announcement.

GM and Samsung SDI plan to collectively function the manufacturing facility, which is predicted to make nickel-rich prismatic and cylindrical cells.

The venture is GM’s fourth three way partnership battery cell manufacturing facility. It has introduced three others with South Korea’s LG Energy Solution. The new manufacturing facility can have greater than 30 gigawatt hours of capability and can improve GM’s whole U.S. battery cell capability to about 160 gigawatt hours when it’s at full manufacturing, the businesses mentioned.

GM has pledged to promote solely electrical autos by 2030.
