Iraq lifts ban on access to Telegram

Iraq lifts ban on access to Telegram

Telegram, which was closed Aug. 6 by the Iraqi authorities, can be opened for entry beginning Aug. 13, the Communications Ministry introduced late Saturday.

The ban can be lifted on the directions of Prime Minister Mohammad Shiya al-Sudani, it mentioned in an announcement.

“The ban was lifted after the company that owns the application responded to the requests of the security authorities to identify the parties who leaked citizens’ data,” the assertion harassed.

Iraq is just not in opposition to freedom of expression, however the dedication of firms with social media purposes to respect the nation’s legal guidelines, safety and person knowledge is vital, it added.

The Communications Ministry introduced Aug. 6 the choice to ban entry to Telegram had been taken “at the request of high-level authorities of the state.”

The justification for the choice was “preventing the leaking of private documents belonging to the state and protecting the personal data of citizens.”

The Iranian-backed Shiite militias that actively use the social media platform in Iraq reacted harshly to this step.

They had claimed that the U.S. had given the federal government the order to close down Telegram.
