Over 1,600 students lost their lives in Feb. 6 Türkiye quakes: YÖK

Over 1,600 college students, together with 121 worldwide college students, succumbed to the latest earthquakes that struck Türkiye’s southeastern area on Feb. 6, in keeping with knowledge shared by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) on Wednesday.

The Parliamentary Earthquake Investigation Commission, established to research the loss triggered by the latest disasters in all elements, convened for the twelfth time underneath the chairpersonship of YÖK member professor Ömer Açıkgöz.

The report, ready with knowledge obtained from 133 universities, highlighted 1,605 college students died within the latest earthquakes whereas 1,609 are underneath remedy of whom 135 are worldwide college students.

Some 56,987 college students have been evacuated to completely different provinces, 21,341 misplaced their households and 102,916 misplaced their houses in the course of the latest disaster.

Meanwhile, 1,148 personnel died, 45 sought remedy in hospitals, 265 misplaced their households and seven,581 misplaced their houses within the devastating quakes.

Ministry of Youth and Sports and General Directorate of Higher Education Student Loans and Dormitories (KYK) Deputy General Manager Mustafa Özgül shared that they presently host 144,000 residents in KYK dormitories.

“Considering the students who receive face-to-face education, we have developed a modular system ready for September, just like in Izmir’s Urla for six dormitories destroyed in the recent earthquakes,” Özgül added.
