Turkish customs seize 76 illegally imported tarantulas in Muğla

Turkish customs officers intercepted a cargo of 76 tarantula hatchlings on Sunday that had been illegally imported from Poland through publish to the Marmaris district of the southwestern province of Muğla.

According to an announcement from the Ministry of Commerce, the bundle was initially labeled as “aquarium plants.”

However, upon inspection by the General Directorate of Customs Enforcement, it was found that the bundle contained 76 spiders confined in small glass tubes and wrapped in newspapers, the Demirören News Agency (DHA) reported.

Experts from Kırıkkale University recognized that the seized tarantulas belonged to eight completely different species.

Following the required procedures, the infant tarantulas had been handed over to the Biology Department of Sıtkı Koçman University.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing beneath the supervision of the Marmaris Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office.
