US State Department says it is going to use Türkiye as an alternative of Turkey in official communications following Ankara’s request.
The US State Department has stated it is going to largely cease writing the phrase Turkey and as an alternative name the nation Türkiye, agreeing to a request by the Turkish authorities.
In an announcement on Thursday saying measures to disrupt financiers of Daesh, the State Department wrote of joint motion between “the United States and Türkiye,” written with an umlaut over the letter u.
“The Turkish embassy did request that we use this spelling in our communications,” State Department spokesperson Ned Price stated.
“The Department will use the spelling that you saw today in most of our formal diplomatic and bilateral contexts, including in public communications,” he stated.
The Pentagon has been writing Türkiye since an August assertion on a name between the NATO allies’ defence chiefs and the State Department has sometimes used the spelling on social media.

Use of Türkiye
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in 2021 ordered the constant use of Türkiye in languages that use Latin script.
“The word Türkiye represents and expresses the culture, civilisation, and values of the Turkish nation in the best way,” Erdogan stated in communique.
Among different English-speaking nations, the embassy web sites in Ankara of Australia, Canada, India and New Zealand write Türkiye, whereas the British, Irish and South African embassies use Turkey.
Countries altering or tweaking their names will not be as uncommon as one may assume.
In current years, the Netherlands dropped the title Holland in a bid to simplify its picture to the world.
Before that, Macedonia modified its title to North Macedonia because of a political dispute with Greece.
In 1935, Iran modified its title from Persia, a reputation that Westerners primarily used.
As many as eleven nations have modified or amended their names over the many years.
