Ankara welcomes the extension of the UN cross-border mechanism for humanitarian help to northwest Syria for a six-month interval, the Turkish Foreign Ministry stated on Monday.
“The UN mechanism plays a vital role in the delivery of urgent humanitarian assistance to 4.1 million people in need in this region,” stated a ministry assertion.
The scale of the humanitarian disaster in northwestern Syria and regional stability necessitate the longer-term upkeep of the UN mechanism, it added.
“Türkiye, which has maintained its cooperation with the international community to this end, will continue to do so in the future,” the ministry stated.
The UN on Monday prolonged a decision that permits the usage of the Bab al-Hawa border crossing by Türkiye to ship humanitarian support into northwestern Syria, the one remaining accessible route into the besieged area.
The long-running support operation has been in place since 2014.
The 15-member Security Council adopted the decision unanimously, with Russia voting in favor of it in a shock transfer. The decision permits the supply of humanitarian support to some 4 million folks till July 10.
