Türkiye wont allow Greece to expand territorial waters by even 1 mile, says Turkish FM

Türkiye on Thursday once more drew a pink line towards any enlargement of Greek territorial waters within the Aegean Sea.

“We will not allow the expansion of (Greek) territorial waters by even 1 mile in the Aegean, let alone 12,” Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu advised an end-of-year press briefing within the capital Ankara, responding to experiences that Athens plans to increase territorial waters across the island of Crete to 12 nautical miles.

Citing a Turkish parliamentary 1995 resolution on the matter, Çavuşoğlu mentioned: “We are warning Greece once more. Don’t get into sham heroism by trusting those who might have your back. Don’t seek adventurism. It won’t end well for you!”

The 1995 declaration warns that if Greece will increase its territorial waters within the Aegean past 6 miles, parliament will give “all powers,” together with army powers, to the federal government to defend Türkiye’s pursuits.

Çavuşoğlu mentioned that declaration “remains in force today.”

Türkiye continues its dialogue with the UN, U.S., Russia, Iraq in addition to Syria’s Bashar al-Assad regime, he mentioned, additionally commenting on a tripartite assembly of the Turkish, Russian, and Syrian protection ministers and intelligence officers in Moscow on Wednesday.

“I will also be meeting with (Russian Foreign Minister Sergey) Lavrov,” he added.
