Türkiye’s fastest-growing urban population reaches 67.9%

Some 67.9% of Türkiye’s inhabitants resides in city settlements, the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) revealed in its “Urban-Rural Population Statistics 2022” on Thursday.

As of December 2022, over 57 million individuals reside in city settlements, which represent 1.6% of Türkiye’s whole floor space. A complete of 17.3% of the nation’s inhabitants resides in rural settlements constituting 93.5% of Türkiye’s floor space, and 14.8% of the inhabitants lives in medium-density cities that represent 4.9% of the nation’s floor space.

According to the info distribution by gender, it was seen that 49.7% of the inhabitants residing in city areas have been males, and 50.3% have been ladies – whereas 51.4% of these dwelling in rural areas have been males and 48.6% have been ladies.

The 2022 report additionally reveals that 30.1% of the inhabitants aged 65 and over, which constitutes 9.9% of the entire inhabitants within the nation, reside in rural settlements, and 14.6% of older individuals reside in medium-density cities, with 55.3% dwelling in city areas.

The majority of these dwelling in city areas are individuals between the ages of 15-64, which constitutes 68.1% of Türkiye’s inhabitants, 69.2% of whom reside in densely populated areas, 14.7% reside in medium-density cities and 16.1% in rural areas respectively.

In addition, within the 0-14 age group, outlined because the baby inhabitants, 69.7% reside in city areas, 15.3% in medium-dense city and 15% in rural areas.

According to Address Based Population Registration System Results (ABPRS) 2022, it was seen that 96.4% of the residents of Istanbul, which is the province with the best inhabitants, reside in settlements categorised as dense city, 2.7% in medium-dense city and 0.9% in rural areas.

As for Ankara, 88.3% of the residents of the second-largest province population-wise in Türkiye reside in dense city areas, 7.6% in medium-dense and 4.1% in rural settlements. Whereas 78.6% of the residents of Izmir, which ranks third in inhabitants dimension, reside in dense city areas, 12.2% in medium-dense and 9.1% in rural settlements.

Regarding the native information, the best proportion of the inhabitants residing in medium-density cities was Artvin at 58.1%, Bayburt at 57.9% and Sinop at 57.3%.

On the opposite hand, the provinces with the bottom proportion of the inhabitants residing in settlements categorised as medium-density cities have been Kilis at 1.6%, Istanbul at 2.7% and Eskişehir at 6.5%.

Ardahan was the province with the best proportion of individuals, with 68.4% dwelling in rural areas. Ardahan was adopted by Tunceli with 60.3% and Bartın with 54.2%.

The provinces with the bottom proportion of residents in rural areas have been Istanbul at 0.9%, Ankara at 4.1% and Kocaeli at 4.7%.
