The United Nations included the desecration of holy books, together with the Quran, in a draft decision on hate crimes, racism and discrimination in response to Türkiye’s proposal, Ankara’s Permanent Representative to UNESCO Ambassador Gülnur Aybet mentioned Friday.
Aybet wrote on X that “underneath Türkiye’s management, we added the UNGA decision declaring crimes in opposition to holy books as violations of worldwide legislation to the UNESCO determination draft.
“While stating our support for combating all forms of hate crimes, I emphasized the alarming increase in crimes associated with hatred against Islam in recent years,” Aybet mentioned, including that she famous UNESCO ought to align with U.N. resolutions about this.
“The draft decision was accepted with the amendments we proposed. Let’s proceed the battle.”
In July 2023, the U.N. General Assembly unanimously adopted a Morocco-sponsored decision calling acts of violence in opposition to spiritual symbols, holy books, and locations of worship a violation of worldwide legislation.
