UNDP seeks $550M for sustainable recovery projects in quake-hit Türkiye

The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) has been engaged on elevating $550 million for 31 tasks that may contribute to the sustainable restoration of Türkiye’s quake-hit southern area.

The UNDP’s name comes following a world donor convention that occurred in Brussels on March 20, which mobilised $7.5 billion in help for the earthquake response in Türkiye.

‘Building again higher’

Based on the findings of TERRA, the UNDP has ready a roadmap providing 31 tasks for “building back better” within the quake-hit area.

The organisation is looking for $550 million in funding to implement the tasks it’s proposing for supporting a sustainable restoration.

“The scope of the destruction is unprecedented,” UNDP consultant in Türkiye Louisa Vinton advised Anadolu Agency. 

“This is why we expect equally unprecedented commitments from global donors.”

She stated the tasks the UNDP is proposing are aimed toward restoring livelihoods, social providers, and cultural heritage.

“Reconstruction is not just about bricks and mortar, but also lives and livelihoods. People need secure employment to ensure a steady income, they need public services such as health care and education, and they need to be able to shop, relax and socialize with other people,” stated Vinton.

“In short, they need to get back to normal life as soon as possible. At UNDP, we are already working in the region on projects that put people at the forefront of the recovery and rebuilding efforts.”

Sustainable restoration roadmap

According to the UNDP’s roadmap for a sustainable restoration within the area, reconstruction actions and development-oriented programmes are wanted to revive livelihoods and create new revenue and employment alternatives within the area to “halt and then reverse the ongoing exodus of the workforce” from the area.

The reconstruction within the quake-hit area gives alternatives to include inexperienced and climate-resilient options into the restoration, the UNDP stated.

The proposed tasks are constructed on 4 pillars: help to government-led disaster response and restoration planning, restoration of crucial infrastructure and safety of cultural heritage, help livelihoods and socio-economic restoration and “leaving no one behind” by focused help to weak teams.
