At least 70 injured after magnitude 5.8 quake hits Iran

At least 70 folks had been wounded after a magnitude 5.8 earthquake hit northwestern Iran close to Türkiye on Wednesday.

The quake struck close to the town of Khoy in West Azerbaijan province at 13:38 p.m. (1008 GMT), at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) stated.

The Seismological Center of the University of Tehran stated the earthquake was magnitude 5.4 and 12 kilometers (7.45 miles) deep.

At least “70 people were injured” attempting to flee to security and greater than 300 homes in 15 villages had been broken, state tv stated, citing officers from the realm.

Iran sits astride the boundaries of a number of main tectonic plates and experiences frequent seismic exercise.

In February 2020, a magnitude 5.7 earthquake that rattled the western village of Habash-e Olya killed at the least 9 folks over the border in neighboring Türkiye.

Iran’s deadliest recorded quake was a magnitude 7.4 tremor in 1990 that killed 40,000 folks within the nation’s north, injured 300,000 and left half 1,000,000 homeless.
