An armed dissident group of Colombia’s disbanded FARC guerrillas has mentioned it was “ready” to begin peace talks with the federal government from May 16.

“We are announcing to the world that our delegates to the dialogue table with the Colombian government… are ready for May 16,” mentioned the EMC dissident grouping on Sunday, which rejected a 2016 peace deal that disarmed the FARC.

Speaking at a gathering of EMC leaders, spokeswoman Angela Izquierdo added: “We hope the official installation of the table can be realized.”

EMC high leaders have been assembly on a farm within the southern San Vicent e del Caguan area because the begin of April, together with consultations with native communities underneath EMC management, to plot a method for peace negotiations.

They included Ivan Mordisco, who the federal government erroneously claimed to have killed final 12 months.

Petro’s ‘whole peace’ plan

Some dissidents rejected the 2016 peace settlement that led to the dissolution of Latin America’s most fearsome guerrilla group, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), whereas others later returned to the fold after failing to combine into civilian life.

Colombia’s first-ever leftist President Gustavo Petro, in workplace since final August, has pursued negotiations with FARC dissidents and different armed teams which have continued a bloody battle over drug and unlawful mining assets.

Petro got here to energy with plans to deliver “total peace” to a rustic scarred by many years of violence.

The EMC is estimated to have about 3,000 fighters working primarily within the Amazon, on the Pacific coast and close to the border with Venezuela.
