Russian President Vladimir Putin is likely to be making ready for a protracted struggle in Ukraine, Germany’s protection minister mentioned on Wednesday.
Speaking on the Federal Academy for Security Policy (BAKS ), Boris Pistorius mentioned he noticed no indications that Russia was fascinated about diplomatic talks to finish the struggle.
“I don’t see any signs of this, and it seems to me that he is preparing to be able to fight this war for many, many years,” he mentioned.
Pistorius reiterated that Germany will proceed to provide weapons to Ukraine, to assist Kyiv defend its personal territory.
He underlined that German weapons programs, such because the Gepard anti-aircraft tanks, have been efficient thus far, and saved many lives within the nation.
But he spoke cautiously about Ukraine’s request for long-range Taurus missiles.
“The decision hasn’t been made yet,” Pistorius mentioned, including that he shall be supporting Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s line on this.
He added that they should make cautious choices on such issues.
“We have to weigh these possibilities, by comparing them with our national interests. Because we have sworn an oath to protect the German people, and this comes first,” he mentioned.
Despite rising stress from Ukraine, Scholz has been cautious thus far about delivering Taurus missiles, fearing that they can be utilized to assault targets in Russia, and make Germany a celebration to the battle.
Since the struggle started in February 2022, Germany offered €22 billion ($24 billion) in monetary assist to Ukraine, together with €12 billion ($13 billion) in army support.
