KRG in northern Iraq to hold long-delayed elections in February

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in northern Iraq will likely be holding the delayed parliamentary elections in February 2024, in keeping with a press release by the presidential workplace on Thursday.

The parliamentary elections will likely be held on Feb. 25, 2024, it stated in a press release.

Parliamentary elections within the KRG, that are imagined to happen each 4 years, have been final held in September 2018.

Originally scheduled for Oct. 1 of final yr, the KRG parliamentary elections have been postponed by nearly a yr to Nov. 18, 2023.

However, resulting from ongoing disagreements between the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) over minority quotas, election legal guidelines, and the activation of the High Electoral Commission, the election date has been pushed again but once more.

In the present 111-seat parliament within the KRG, Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) has 45 lawmakers, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) has 21, Gorran Movement has 12, New Generation Movement has eight, and Kurdistan Islamic Society Party (Komel) has seven.

The Turkmen group elected 5 representatives, whereas the Christian group elected six representatives below the quota system.
