Poland, Baltic states call on Belarus to expel Russias Wagner mercenaries

Poland and the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania have demanded that Belarus expel the Russian Wagner mercenary group from its territory, Polish media reported on Monday.

Polish Interior Minister Mariusz Kaminski stated at a joint press convention with the inside ministers of the Baltic states that all of them demand the elimination of irregular migrants close to Belarus’ border zones with Poland, Latvia, and Lithuania, in accordance with the state-run PAP news company.

Reiterating that the state of affairs across the Belarus border is what introduced them collectively for the assembly, he stated “This situation is escalating. For several months, we have been dealing with attempts by migrants to illegally cross.”

The paramilitary Wagner Group’s presence in Belarus has aggravated the state of affairs, Kaminski famous.

He added, “Should a critical situation break out on the borders with Belarus, regardless of its Polish, Latvian, or Lithuanian border, we will retaliate.”

In such a situation, Kaminski warned, all border crossings, which might be nonetheless open with Belarus, could be closed.

In current weeks, Poland, Latvia, and Lithuania introduced measures to strengthen border safety with Belarus, citing safety threats posed by the Wagner Group’s presence in Belarus and a rise in unlawful border crossing makes an attempt, which they blame on Minsk.

Earlier this month, the Lithuanian authorities introduced the closure of the Tverecius and Sumskas border crossing factors with Belarus.

However, the remaining 4 border checkpoints with Belarus-Medininkai, Lavoriskes, Raigardas, and Salcininkai-will stay open for now, it added.

The authorities stated the choice was made as a result of geopolitical circumstances and the necessity to scale back threats in mild of Wagner Group’s presence in Belarus.
