Police arrest anti-monarchy protesters at King Charles’ coronation

The United Kingdom police on Saturday arrested 52 folks, together with Graham Smith, chief of an anti-monarchist group Republic as they ready to protest alongside the route of a procession for the coronation of King Charles III.

The protesters have been detained for a spread of offenses together with affray, breach of the peace and conspiracy to trigger a public nuisance.

In an announcement, the London police drive mentioned all those that had been held remained in custody.

“They’ve arrested six of our organisers and seized hundreds of placards, they won’t tell us why they’ve arrested them or where they’re being held,” a Republic activist informed Agence France-Presse (AFP) in London’s Trafalgar Square.

Republic chief govt Graham Smith was a kind of arrested earlier than the group had an opportunity to wave placards declaring: “Not My King.”

Some onlookers close by shouted “free Graham Smith!” But others shouted “God save the king” and waved Union flags.

A digital camera crew from the group Alliance of European Republican Movements was on the scene and requested a senior police officer why the group had been detained.

“They’re under arrest. End of,” the officer informed them, strolling off.

There was no rapid remark from London’s Metropolitan police drive, which was controversially granted new anti-protest powers by the U.Okay. authorities below a brand new regulation rushed by means of this week.

On its Twitter feed, Republic confirmed the arrests and seizure of placards. “Is this democracy?” it demanded.
