Syria OKs UN aid delivery through Türkiye for 6 months

The Syrian authorities has given authorization to the United Nations for delivering very important humanitarian support provides by a crossing from Türkiye for an additional six months on Thursday.

The U.N. support deliveries must be “in full cooperation and coordination with the Syrian Government,” Syria’s U.N. Ambassador Bassam Sabbagh wrote in a letter on Thursday to the Security Council, seen by Reuters.

Two crossings have been opened following earthquakes in February and have been prolonged by Aug. 13.

Initially, Syrian President Bashar Assad allowed using the 2 crossings for an preliminary interval of three months.

Asked by Anadolu Agency (AA) if the U.N. is involved with the Syrian authorities to take care of these crossings open following the closure of Bab al-Hawa border crossing, U.N. chief Antonio Guterres’ spokesperson Stephane Dujarric stated they have been in common contact with Syrian authorities in Damascus.

The U.N. needed to finish its support operations by the Bab al-Hawa border crossing after the U.N. Security Council didn’t undertake two rival resolutions to increase cross-border support supply from Türkiye into northern Syria.

Western nations have been looking for a nine-month extension, however Russia insisted on solely a six-month extension.

The long-running support operation, which has been in place since 2014 and allowed the supply of support to 4 million individuals in Syria by the Bab al-Hawa border crossing, expired on Monday.
