US repatriates Pakistani brothers held without charges at Guantanamo Bay

Abdul Rabbani and Mohammed Rabbani have been incarcerated for twenty years on the infamous facility for allegedly aiding distinguished al Qaeda leaders.

The United States has transferred two brothers from the Guantanamo Bay detention facility in Cuba to Pakistan, bringing the whole variety of individuals held at Guantanamo right down to 32, the Pentagon stated.

On Thursday, the Pentagon introduced the repatriation of Abdul Rabbani and Mohammed Rabbani to Pakistan.

“The United States appreciates the willingness of the Government of Pakistan and other partners to support ongoing US efforts focused on responsibly reducing the detainee population and ultimately closing the Guantanamo Bay facility,” the Pentagon stated in a press release.

Both have been arrested in 2002. Abdul Rabbani was an al Qaeda facilitator, whereas Mohammed Rabbani was a monetary and journey facilitator for distinguished al Qaeda leaders, in accordance with the Pentagon’s web site.

Notorious for torture 

The Guantanamo camp was established by Republican President George W Bush in 2002 to accommodate overseas terrorism suspects following the 9/11 assaults on New York and the Pentagon that killed about 3,000 individuals.

It got here to symbolise the excesses of the US “war on terror” due to harsh interrogation strategies that critics have stated amounted to torture.

There have been 40 detainees when President Joe Biden, a Democrat, took workplace in 2021. Biden has stated he hopes to shut the ability. The federal authorities is barred by regulation from transferring Guantanamo detainees to US mainland prisons.
