Lithuania’s president warned Sunday that if Belarus is to host Wagner mercenary group chief Yevgeny Prigozhin then NATO might want to strengthen its japanese flank.
The head of state, whose Baltic nation neighbours each Belarus and Russia and can host subsequent month’s NATO summit, spoke after a state safety council assembly to debate Wagner’s aborted revolt towards the Kremlin.
After Prigozhin referred to as off his troops’ advance on Saturday, Moscow stated the Wagner chief would depart Russia for Belarus and wouldn’t face fees.
“If Prigozhin or part of the Wagner group ends up in Belarus with unclear plans and unclear intentions, it will only mean that we need to further strengthen the security of our eastern borders,” Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda instructed reporters.
“I am not only talking about Lithuania here, but without a doubt the whole of NATO,” he stated.
Nauseda added that Lithuania will dedicate extra intelligence capabilities to assessing the “political and security aspects of Belarus”.
Lithuania will host subsequent month’s NATO summit, and Nauseda stated the final safety plan for the assembly doesn’t require adjustments following the Russian developments.
He stated he believed Russian President Vladimir Putin may face even larger challenges sooner or later, including: “The king is naked.”
The Wagner rebel marked the most important problem but to Putin’s lengthy rule and Russia’s most critical safety disaster since he got here to energy in 1999.
