Yevgeny Prigozhin, the top of Russia‘s Wagner mercenary group, invited Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu to the jap Ukrainian metropolis of Bakhmut to get a first-hand impression of the combating.
“In view of the difficult operational situation and your many years of combat experience, I ask you to come to Bakhmut, which is under the control of Russian military units, and assess the situation yourself,” Prigozhin wrote in an open letter to the minister that was posted on Telegram.
Often described as President Vladimir Putin‘s non-public military, Wagner has been utilized in Russian navy operations in a number of nations.
But the connection has soured between Prigozhin’s forces and the Russian Defence Ministry, with Prigozhin complaining of an absence of enough ammunition and lobbing private assaults on Shoigu.
Friday’s invitation was seen as mocking Shoigu – notably the reference to “many years of combat experience.”
Shoigu, though he has the title of military basic, by no means served within the armed forces.
Earlier this month Prigozhin threatened to drag all his forces from Bakhmut, saying his mercenaries have been vulnerable to being fully encircled resulting from an absence of help from Russian troopers and too little ammunition.
Bakhmut has been underneath joint assault by the Russian military and Wagner’s troops for months. The metropolis had a pre-war inhabitants of 70,000 and is now a largely destroyed wasteland after months of gruelling combating.
Ukraine has managed to cling on to the town, however which aspect has the higher hand is a matter of debate between Kiev and Moscow.
